After some discussion, it's been decided that the new site will have a forum. Many members have asked for one, and it may be a good way to attract new members and get them more involved (without having to brave Milliways). If it works and is used, great, if not, then we won't have lost anything.

Suggestions for forums/categories (additions/comments welcome)

Discussion/support for:

• Linux
• MacOS
• Windows
• Other OSes
• Hardware

• Program Advisory
• Gaming/games server
• Society, including Projects
• General chat

Technical Details

• Deploy  PunBB (unless someone knows of something markedly better?)
• Should ideally be run as its own user, with its own Postgres DB
• Hacking PunBB to authenticate against system users is very much doable (I'll write more about auth options later - chckens)

Is it packaged in extras or any of the other repos? If not can you package it? - sits There's no package available anywhere that I can find. I can see that having a package might make management that bit easier, so I'll look into creating one - chckens

This is now packaged. I've included a hack to only allow people to register who have a sucs.org e-mail address (patch at  http://www.sucs.org/~chckens/punbb-sucs_registration.patch should anyone need it) This should make it much easier to integrate with a sitewide auth system sometime in the future. - chckens

Beware of too many categories, if you start with too many then there will be few postings in any one, so they look dead, so nobody bothers. start with just a couple of busy ones and split them out as needed. -Art
